Positioning

These are some of the issues I have been investigating over the last year. Some points of study have come to a personal conclusion whereas others I hope to investigate further in the following months. Both my design work and design research unit became focused on the visual event of architecture as summarised below-

Artists and architects share a common agenda in the endeavour to communicate the actuality of spatial experience within the constraints of two dimensional representation.

I hope to develop this research further in order to shape and control my thesis work. I envisgae these ideas becoming separate yet integral to my project this year. This initial subject matter may become categorised as representation of the enigmatic qualities of space.

'all the techniques of representation and all the paths to architecture which do not include direct experience are pedagogically useful, of practical necessity and intellectually fruitful; but their function is no more allusive and preparatory to that moment in which we, with everything in us that is physical and spiritual and, above all, human, enter and experience the spaces we have been studying. That is the moment of architecture.'

Bruno Zevi

The suggestion by Zevi influenced my thinkings from last year. In one statement he suggests that architecture can never be represented fully outwith direct experience almost closing the debate in regards to representstion of space. However I feel that yes experiencing space is important and vital and will give the purest understanding of a place, however there is something interesting that can only be captured in a two dimensional way. For example, the way we remember and recall place, also the transfer of internalised ideas from the mind into the world V onto paper can tell us vast amounts about the essence of a space, the emotive qualities and impact of place on people.

This appears to be my current position on last years research.
